The Night at Chamia Bar

I have been to Mumbai earlier but that time my state of mind was typically not accepting anything except the search of job, the desperate search of JOB after my masters course which was very less known to the world. I used to get the offer of marketing of financial product which I had decided not to go for at any cost. I had to go back empty hand after spending quite a lot of my father’s money. Now is the time I should experience what you call the real world or no, an unreal world… ok let me see that.

With all the nostalgia of the train journey I had of the first visit to Mumbai I boarded off the plane. That train journey was no doubt one of the best of its own kind. It was the passion to achieve something from the city of dream which kept me drowned in dreams till I really experienced it. One of the toughest lives I have ever had in my life. Joy of reaching the city of money to the frustration of not getting any of my shares was really a heavy journey back. But this was really different with just a meeting to attend which was not at all of my interest. My interest this time was to experience this golden city differently.

My friend was waiting outside the airport to pick me up. It took full two hours by road from Santakrutz to Mira Road but just 140 buck to auto driver. I knew that all the CHAMIA bars are closed for bar girls and they are just a bar with all the noise of full blown heavy weight speaker all around. I was hesitant to tell my friends my desire to go to CHAMIA Bar but at the same time much determined to have that in my dairy of events. My friend with much open mind is very much expected to be frequent visitors and that’s why I could open my mouth before him yelling my hidden desire in a style which he could not judge as a real strong desire. I reached Mira road at 9:00 PM. World seemed to be fully awake. Fully crowded Mira road soon became dull and we after having a long chat decided to have some drinks and sleep. Next day was the day of my desire and from morning I was making much of the effort to make my friend agree to take me to one such bar. He took me to bandstand (or brand stand or something) in the afternoon where I saw the Mumbai. Shahrukh khan’s Mannat could not attract me as much as those couple who were having mysterious love behind rocks. Don’t know whether they were trying to hide or expose. Evening went watching a movie named ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan. It was real good movie giving a very nice meaningful message, “when will we stop pushing each other (different community) offensively to counter the aggression of each other and break the chain?” While coming out of the Mall I opened my mouth fully and asked my friend whether he can take me to any bar where bar girls dance and don’t know what they do.

All are still having all nuisances with bar girls dancing and doing all sorts of things but in really concealed but open way. This is what my friend told me. Excepting him as an experienced person I was much docile like dog to accept that with full of pleasure in my heart.

It was 11 PM when we entered that noisy small hall with people seemed kissing each other but actually coming close to ear trying to be heard. The bartender greeted my friend with great smile which was much obvious. Maximum people seemed to be frequent visitors to whom all waiters were very friendly. To my amazement, one waiter smiled at me too, with much of welcome being floated towards me. So I was welcomed with my friend and felt little comfortable sitting on torn cushioned seats. In front seat was one single chassis drunk person with all seemingly simple look but sunken in his own world alone. Behind me was a colourful person probably from Africa. He must be a rich person as many people seemed greeting him sometimes even with hugs. His night clothes full of colour made him more colourful with lights of different colour falling from all directions. Walls were having beautiful paintings of girls with much of nudity. You may even consider them as sketches with colours filled in beautifully. I was the only person looking at those walls, probably because I was the only first time visitor there. Three guys singing some of the good songs in their own style or may be just not able to copy the exact way so coming out to be something different. One of them seemed to have a bad throat but still in full swing at people loving his songs and even giving away good amount of money for that. One guy on the corner just diagonal to me, occupying full one table was, as told by my friend, a highly paid high official in some good stock broking firm. He was a frequent visitor and seemed to be relaxing with his drink with no one to talk. Yes of course, all waiters seemed to be his friend and came greeted him one by one till he was fully settled with his drink. We just find a place anyways to have some companion around even if not in real sense. Even having a feeling of having probably can give a huge relief to overcome the pain of not having. He might be lacking something which he was trying to fill or god know whether he was just trying to get rid of his huge money which he was someway hating. Or it may be giving him a sense of pride in certain group of people he was concerned with or even no way concerned with. But this was the place where he was getting immense love from people around and so the satisfaction was very well manifesting itself on his face. Some people where just a silent spectator like me, or enjoying those songs and in deep love with them. Alcohol can make such a great place of diversity with in a small hall with suffocating crowd was out of my imagination. By that time I had finished my first peg and watching some of the young guys dancing euphorically. One of them was so much imitating the dance for the song in the movie that I had a desire to offer him a role in my film whenever I would manage to make one.

But where are those girls for whom I came here? This was the sudden eruption of a big question which I had lost while observing the environment around. I asked my friend to enquire and he called a waiter who came pleasantly smiling as if we called him to give a part of world in gift. He suggested us to wait for sometime and we had to take one more peg. Probably my bad luck showed its show and no girls came. My all fantasy fastened its bag and started taking leave. Suddenly all picture of pseudo life started becoming clear before me. The cheerful smile of waiters and bartender stated seeming a villainous act. I could know that this is there job or else why I could have been probably greeted by many of them till that time. The painting of wall was no more beautiful and all people there started seeming frustrated and no way complacent. This was not because my desire took a dip in frustration but because now I started looking just in a way I look to people. A small clumsy room full of cigarette smoke and bombardment of sound was all the people were enjoying.

The life is same, the world is same and the people are same in their nature. It all depends on the state of mind when we live the moment. I have enjoyed the dust as such in my village playing various games in my childhood. Now I have allergy from dust. I used to love the winter season and used to wait for it to enjoy the life in the blanket watching television and shipping hot tea. Now I probably have allergy to cold too. I could have been different had I had seen those girls in the bar, but my heart says it doesn’t matter as the enjoyment there would have been momentous affair and no real thing. The real pleasure of life come in what we are up to and what we want to do. I would have returned to my real self any ways. Making those pseudo pleasures in our life, as it seemed, is just like living in false paradise and nothing else. I came out quickly but don’t know when people handcuffed would break their false magical pleasure and come out to live in more real world. I have much more important work to attend the meeting here and I am going to extract full out of it. This is how my fantasy became empathy and then ended in sympathy.

Anyhow, that was anyway a memorable time of my life.
