How can I convert my hallway outlet into a dual-sided outlet?
I have a two plug, three prong outlet box in my hallway, next to the hall closet. The hall closet does not have a light and I would like to install one in the closet and have the light wired to the hall outlet box, while keeping the outlet usable in the hallway. How can I accomplish this wiring?
Yeah, it’s doable if you have the ability to run wire from the outlet electrical box to the location where the light box will be.
What you are essentially doing is just extending the circuit by tying into it, using pigtails makes this easy.
Here are some links that show how to do it. If the hallway outlet is on the end of the circuit it will only have one set of wires coming into the box. If this is the case, you can just tie your new wire into the other hot side of the outlet. If it is in the middle of a circuit, it will have a set of wires coming in and a set going out. If this is the case, you can use pigtails to continue (branch) the circuit to the light.
You may think about installing a motion-activated switch in the box and continuing the wire to the ceiling where you can mount a florescent bulb. This way, when you open the door, the light automatically comes on, and will go off after you close the door. There are links on how to do this on the net if you Google how to, but it is just continuing the circuit further from the switch to the light which is how you would have to run a switch to light anyway.
