Using an old link to fix a bicycle cain?

When I first bought my chain, it was to long so I took some links out and kept them. Now, my chain is broken and I was wondering if I can use the pins from the links I took out, to fix the chain.

The chain cost 75$ and is only 3 weeks old.

It is exceedingly difficult to reinsert links successfully. Due to the way modern chains are made the reinserted links are going to be forever tight or weakly coupled and subject to breaking. Basically, when a chain gets too short, it needs to be replaced.

At best, you may attempt to insert an SRAM Power Link. SRAM and Shimano are completely compatible – just make sure to get the correct width of Power Link.

It is very important to use the appropriate connectors for the brand of chain you are working with. For example, you never want to press out a Shimano pin then press it back into place. The ends of the pins are peened during the manufacturing process to provide extra holding strength. When you press the pin out to break the chain it shears off the peened section. That pin will never be as strong again. This is why you need to use the long, pilot pin Shimano provides with the chain or an SRAM Power Link. SRAM, Wipperman, etc. all provide connectors to put chains together with. When you buy a chain buy some extra connectors and keep them in your saddle bag in case you break a chain during a ride.
