Brake rotors – at the heart of great braking
If you go and see one of those adventure movies which has wild animals you will likely enjoy one in which there is a rhinoceros charging down at great speed proving to be something that can do great damage. The thunderous force of the marauding beast will remain in your memory forever. The unstoppable force of the beast is so much that it seems it can charge down anything.
And if you were to think of your fast driven car as an angry heavy beast moving at great speed you would know that it has more energy than even the charging rhinoceros. And yet unless the car is driven by a person wanting to show off its performance a car hardly seems to be a beast leave alone an angry one charging about the place. Of course the energy does not just vanish into thin air but it is dissipated quietly and efficiently by the act of the brake pads being pressed against the brake rotors.
Brake rotors need to be good at creating friction and when there is heat generated while doing that they need to get rid of the heat as well. They also need to be strong because the braking force is carried by them to the wheel of the car. As you can expect there is ongoing research to improve the performance of brake rotors for all these functions. So there are innovative brake rotors such as slotted brake rotors which have more surface area and so are able to generate more friction. The more traditional brake rotors have holes drilled into them to help dissipate the heat. For normal use drilled brake rotors are better because slotted brake rotors tend to wear out the brake pads faster.
If your car is a few years old and you are planning to spend some money to bring back its good old days you should consider going in for new brake rotors.
