Tips to Ensure Your School’s Safety Equipment is Ready to Save a Life – Annual, Monthly and Daily Preparedness Strategies to Support Your Equipment and AED Battery
It’s not enough for schools to just have safety equipment readily available in the event of an emergency – it must be in working order to be effective. All AED batteries and equipment must be reexamined at varying levels annual, monthly and even daily to ensure peak performance.
Annual Maintenance Tips
In addition to your school’s ongoing safety communication strategies that ensure new students, teachers, staff and volunteers understand the safety program and are ready to save a life if needed, each year your safety team needs to take a detailed look at the school’s equipment to guarantee everything is powered and working properly. Please consult with your fire department or emergency medical service for a customized plan as well as your safety medical equipment provider to get tips on your specific brand of life-saving tools. 2. Ensure the status indicator is blinking green
3. Remove AED from Case
4. Check expiration dates on pads
5. Check expiration date on the AED battery
6. Place AED back in case and zip closed
Daily checks of the AED battery and emergency medical products are not time consuming and should be completed in order to be ready to respond to an emergency any time of the month or year. At the very least each day, your school safety personnel should verify that the battery of your AED is charged (often represented by a green Status Indicator light) and that the unit is easily accessible.
