Is there a difference between RHD and LHD cars besides that the steering wheel is on the opposite side?
I’ve read about RHD (right hand drive) cars being imported/shipped to the US have to meet emissions, regulations, and safety standards. What does the steering wheel being on the right side have to do with the safety and performance of the car besides you may not be able to see oncoming traffic as easily? I would think everything is the same except for steering wheel side.
A lot of manufacturers who sell cars overseas (overseas have less strict emissions than in the US) dont have to worry about emissions. There are less systems that have to be installed, as well as most have entirely different engines.
For example the Jeep manufacturer (known for 4×4 vehicles) sells lots of Jeeps overseas with DIESEL engines. These Jeeps can easily get up to 35mpg and for being a 4×4 that is very impressive. However the engines produce more emissions and can not be sold in the US. So the US models get the less polluting GAS engines – but can only achieve 20-25mpg.
This is just one system that is different, among many. Not just a steering wheel.
