Wheel Tubular
Are there any means by which you can repair punctures in tubs, reinflate them and carry on?
I’d quite like to buy some tubular wheels, but I am skeptical about whether I would get into trouble riding around on them on my own. Do those CO2 inflators work with tubs, or is there something else I could use, or are tubs best for events only?
Ok — I still ride on tubulars. You won’t be making a repair to the tire on the road. You carry a spare tubular and pressure sensitive tape with you. Tubulars are the original folding tire. CO2 will work, but, because I partially inflate them to mount them straight, I use a pump. My bike pump will pump them up to 120 psi in short order. They don’t hold that much volume of air. Just high pressure.
I prefer all style of road riding on a tubular because of the feel. I have been riding on them for almost 40 years now, and taking care of them is second nature. I have cut them open when I brought the flat home and repaired them. Usually when I have a couple to do. I rode all this season without a flat as tubulars are getting as tough as clinchers. I ride on Tufo. We used to have “thorn catchers” mounted on our bikes when everyone rode tubulars. It was a little wire apparatus that rode on the tire and mounted on your brake mount. The theory is that you pick up puncturing object on the when you run it over, and then you puncture the tube when you ride back over it driving it in. So now when I ride over some suspicious gravel or loose stuff I merely rub the tire for a couple revolutions with the palm of my glove — I have kicked out glass shards.
